Why typing on Windows still slows you down
- Different apps, different habits. Each app has its own shortcuts and quirks. A voice workflow that works the same in all of them is easier to build into your day.
- Built-in voice typing covers quick input. Windows includes voice typing (Win + H), which is handy for a sentence or two. If you dictate all day, you may also want cleanup controls, translation, Dictionary and a history of what you said.
- Office writing is formal. Reports in Word and emails in Outlook need full sentences and correct punctuation, not a raw stream of speech.
- Mixed-language work. Many Windows users write in more than one language during the same day.
Method 1: Built-in Windows voice typing (Win+H)
- Put your cursor in a text box.
- Press Windows key + H on a hardware keyboard, or the Microphone button on the touch keyboard.
- Wait for the "Listening..." alert, then speak.
- Say "Stop listening" or press the microphone button when you are done.
Microsoft says voice typing needs an internet connection and a working microphone, and its article applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10. It is handy for a sentence or two. For a side-by-side look at Win+H and a separate app, see SayDart vs Windows voice typing (Win+H).
Method 2: Voice type in any app with SayDart (3 steps)
- Download and install SayDart for Windows. Get the Windows x64 installer from the download page, run it and sign in with your email. Sign-in uses a one-time email code, so there is no password to create.
- Click into any compatible text field. Outlook, Word, Teams, a browser text box, a code editor's comment or chat panel.
- Press Right Alt, speak, and stop. Right Alt is the Windows default shortcut. The capsule shows that SayDart is recording. With Live transcription display on, the original transcript appears above the capsule. When you stop, review the completed text at your cursor, adjust a word, then send or save.
SayDart for Windows includes automatic updates, so you don't need to reinstall to get new versions.
